The name "iLL Prospekt" means sick perspective, according to the group’s MySpace, but if their perspective is sick, it is only in the newfangled definition: crazy, cool, insane. With synths and turntables, along with the more traditional accompaniment of guitar, bass and drums, iLL Prospekt crafts ambient noise into melody, mixing electronic sounds with chill drum beats, and samples with a solid bass backing.
But these guys are going for simplicity, rather than the dense layers of sound you may expect from their combination of instruments. Minimalist tracks abound, with meandering, translucent melodic lines. Samples never overpower when they make an appearance, only influence and inform the beat. Think of Air’s more delicate efforts and Ratatat’s synths for some small idea of their sound, and catch them at Lambert’s this Friday.
