Yeasayer kicked off Wednesday night at Emo’s with an intensity-fueled set; their typically gorgeous harmonies suffered a bit live, but lead singer Chris Keating more than made up for it with prowling stage presence to spare. Then Man Man came on and blew everyone away. Live, they are a little like the craziest show you've ever seen, but with the addition of rubber snakes, kazoos, and a lead singer swinging from the rafters. Think Gogol Bordello, or White Denim cranked up a few notches, and you’re starting to get the picture.
Coming up this week, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is playing a show that everyone should be buzzing about at the Mohawk this Wednesday with Port O’Brian and local group Loxsly. SSLYBY is quirky, lo-fi pop at its most charming; think of The Shins, only sweeter. If you want to spend the evening grinning at what you hear, check this show out.
Going further into the future, you may want to get your tickets now for the June 16th Rilo Kiley show at Stubbs. As if Rilo Kiley wasn't reason enough, opening act is Thao With the Get Down Stay Down, a California group who was recently in town with Xiu Xiu. Singer Thao Nguyen has a voice that at first listen reminds you of Cat Power - full, quirky, and flexible. But just when you think you have them figured out, Thao will beatbox her way into a song whose carefree bounce reminds you of a Vampire Weekend tune (jaunty, catchy as all get out), and then the guitars will kick in and change their sound yet again. You can’t go wrong catching them and Rilo Kiley at the same time. A song that perfectly illustrates her lovely voice is "Beat (Health Life and Fire)"; listen, love, and head to their MySpace for more free downloads.
